Jubett Farms is also known for its
Lychee and Longan Grove. We have 2 acres dedicated
to these attractive and rare sub tropical fruits. The Lychee originated
over 2000
years ago in the north tropical rainforests and southern sub tropical
low
elevations of Southern China.
This rare sub tropical fruit has been called "the world's most romantic
fruit",
since its fragant, sweet, and juicy flavor is memorable. Its reddish
shell
peels easily, revealing the fruit's pearly white, translucent flesh
which surrounds
a brown, inedible seed.
Lychees keep 2 weeks refrigerated and about 6 months frozen. They should
be
frozen unpeeled, in freezer bags or containers. The Lychee shell may
crack during
freezing, but the fruit's flavor and texture remains good. Defrost
before peeling.
Here, at Jubett Farms, we grow the varieties called Brewsters and
Mauritius.
The Longan is known as the "little brother" of the Lychees. Longans are
a little
larger than an olive, with a thin, rough, caramel colored shell that is
easily peeled.
While the Longan's flesh is sweeter than a Lychee's , it is not as
juicy.
Lychee fruit is usually available from late May to early July, while
Longan fruit
becomes available about a month later.
